Cowgirl Dirt creme and powder foundationsYou know how they say there are two types of makeup users—the scoopers and the skimpers?  I’d be the skimper.  I use just a bit, then it seems like too much, and I wipe half of it off so you can hardly tell I have makeup on.  In other words, I’m the type of person that cosmetic companies really don’t like, because I don’t buy makeup that often!

But it was finally time.  I’d pretty much run out of the foundation I bought right before my wedding.  And this time, I wanted to try something a bit more natural—that hopefully wouldn’t break the bank in the process.

My friend Bethany had been talking about mineral makeup for as long as I could remember.  When I finally tracked down the company she used (Everyday Minerals), I liked the prices—but I wondered about the ingredients.  So I asked you, my dear blog readers.  And an Army wife named Heather recommended a company named Cowgirl Dirt.  (Thank you, Heather, not only for the recommendation, but for all you do for this country by supporting your man!)  I ordered some samples, a blog reader shared more samples (thank you, Erin!), and it came down to an Everyday vs. Cowgirl comparison.

Everyday vs. Cowgirl

Samples from Everyday Minerals and Cowgirl DirtMy sister-in-law and I sat down with mirrors and the samples at my kitchen table.  Marlys and I have similar skin tones so we figured we could see which colors looked best on each of us.

We tried the Everyday Minerals first.  It was hard to settle on one of the five color choices.  There didn’t seem to be a lot of color to them, so almost any of colors in the Fair sample kit worked on Marlys or me, if we applied enough.

Cowgirl Dirt Foundation PowderThen I put on the Cowgirl Dirt Foundation Powder in the Champagne Neutral Tone 3.  It was a perfect match.  And it just felt different.  I think it was the Jojoba oil they use in the powder foundation—it truly felt moist!  I’m going to guess that helps it last longer on my face, as well—I know t doesn’t “melt” off my face in the heat like cream foundations do!  But the best thing about the Cowgirl Dirt Foundation Powder is how much color there is to it and how little you have to use—especially if you’re a “skimper” like me. Smile

Southern Belle Neutral Crème FoundationI’d asked Cowgirl Dirt for a sample of their Southern Belle Neutral Crème Foundation, too—I said to just throw in the crème foundation that best matched the powder samples I was ordering.  The Neutral 3 (Light) that they sent was perfect.  And my favorite thing about their crème foundation is that it comes in a tub instead of a tube—that means I can put my finger in and get a little bit, instead of always squeezing out too much!

The crème foundation definitely provides a fuller coverage—I use it for days when I need more blemish cover up or a long-lasting perfectly made up look.

Ingredient Comparison

Ingredients list on Everyday Minerals Foundation Samples and Cowgirl Dirt FoundationAs far as I can tell, nearly every single mineral makeup company around—except for Cowgirl Dirt—includes Titanium Dioxide in their ingredients.  I’m rather cautious about using something when the ingredients lists often mentions it in ways like “may contain”—just the same way they do potential allergens or other undesirable ingredients.

So, I asked my friends.  They were very helpful.  I basically found out that it’s probably hazardous in large amounts.  Especially if it’s inhaled.  But such a small amount is used in makeup that it’s not been banned yet.

That’s all fine and good.  I mean, I don’t use much makeup—and I do own a microwave and use a cell phone, which I know are also hazardous to my health.  But sometimes I inhale my makeup powder as I’m putting it on.  And what’s more, I kiss and snuggle little cheeks—little cheeks who often ask to have some of Mommy’s makeup put on.

Cost Comparison

So while I’m not one to always buy organic or all-natural (it can be quite hard on the budget!), I decided it was at least worth comparing the prices.  Neither company states the sizes on their websites, so I emailed to get an accurate price comparison.

Samples from Everyday Minerals and Cowgirl Dirt (all used up!)That means that if you buy the large size Cowgirl Dirt, it’s only costing $12.69 for 5.5g.  70 cents more isn’t much when you’re talking about better ingredients!

It’s definitely cheaper to sample the Everyday Minerals: there were five little sifter jars of color choices for just $3.08 shipping (the first sample kit is free, you just pay shipping—additional samples are $5). The Cowgirl Dirt samples are definitely smaller, and they cost $1.99 each.

The difference in the shipping charges were quite dependent on how much I ordered.  Everyday Minerals had slightly lower shipping costs, but that’s to be expected from a large company.

Small Business Customer Service

My only complaint about Cowgirl Dirt before had been the customer service.  But, since then, the company has changed hands.  And when I found out about this, I was thrilled to pieces to find it’s now owned by a young Christian couple!  I also noted that the email response time is much better these days.  (And even if it doesn’t happen to be, I’m inclined to give small businesses a break when I know how few people there are to do everything!)

As a small business owner myself, I love to support small businesses.  I also like to support fellow believers.  And when it doesn’t break the bank, I prefer to choose products that are better for my health.

Dirt

Cowgirl Dirt MakeupSince I always aim to put on makeup in a way that doesn’t make it obvious I’m wearing any makeup, I love how the mineral makeup provides such a light coverage.  (And no, that’s not a sentence that makes sense to most men.  Except that most of them know they prefer the natural look.  Which explains the sentence, right?!)

All in all—natural ingredients, family business, great feel, and a totally cool name—Cowgirl Dirt was an easy choice for this farmer’s wife.  Especially when they have eye shadow colors like “alfalfa,” “hay,” and “farmer’s daughter.” Winking smile

I signed up for a free trial of Amazon Prime so we could order a new clock for our kitchen—paid for entirely with Swagbucks!—and have free shipping.  It seemed like a good time to stock up on pregnancy tea, too, since Amazon’s prices are a bit better than Azure’s.

Then, I knew I really ought to order some more prenatal vitamins, since my bottle from Costco is almost out.  Enter the first most confusing order.

A few months ago I asked my girlfriends to recommend their favorite prenatal vitamins.  They said Super Nutrition’s PreNatal Blend was great for you but smelled nasty.  Rainbow Light’s Complete Prenatal System (as well as Rainbow Light’s Just Once Prenatal) were highly recommended to me, but one friend mentioned she’d seen something in the reviews about lead.  Sure enough, a quick Google search led me to multiple articles about finding extensive amounts of lead in children’s, women’s, and prenatal vitamins.

Rainbow Light was high on the list for having lots of lead, and another vitamin by Super Nutrition was as well.  Scratch those.

Another friend recommended Thorne Basic Prenatal—it looked good but pricey.  Just like the Super Mom vitamins I’d been taking (before I ran out and decided to finish the bottle from Costco!).

The only brand recommended to me that stayed off the “really bad list” in prenatals, and was in fact on the “good list” in a children’s supplement (though I discovered it was on the lower spectrum for lead content in a women’s multi), was NF Formula.  Their Prenatal Forte is dosed for six tablets per day, though that dosage is hidden behind a two-tablet serving.  But if you take all six, they are a bit more than the Super Mom vitamins, which were by now almost my only other option—and here I’d been trying to find something more reasonable!

The other thing I had against Super Mom vitamins was the size of the pills and the 2 pill per day dosage.  I’d heard that smaller pills taken throughout the day will be absorbed more easily than one-or-two-per-day pills.  It didn’t make sense to take such a big, pricey pill that my body would just discard all those good nutrients because it couldn’t deal with them all at once.  (This is my very non-medical understanding of it, you notice by my technical terms here. Winking smile)

But the clincher was that NF Formula Prenatal Forte included herbs, plant enzymes, and probiotics—I decided that since I don’t take any probiotics or get any more herbs than those that are in my pregnancy tea, it was worth the extra price to be getting some more good stuff in my body for baby and me!

Whew.  Decision made.  Prenatal Forte ordered.  But perhaps next time I’ll try the Thorne Basic Prenatal just to round out my prenatal selection in the cupboard.

Now back to the fact that my make-up bag is almost empty!  I’ve been using up old, cheap grocery-store make-up to cover up the breakouts I get from using the cheap makeup to cover up the breakouts (vicious cycle, that).  You all were so helpful in your recommendations, but again, what a quandary!

Everyday Minerals and Cowgirl Dirt were the most highly recommended.  And I loved both of their websites.  Everyday Minerals doesn’t use Bismuth Oxychloride, but they do say their products “may contain Titanium Dioxide”, which, according to Cowgirl Dirt, “has inhalation risks when in loose form and is being tested for its connection to cancer.”  Ack!

Moody Sisters Organic Skincare Intense Moisturizing Cream Announcing…the grand opening of a skin care line founded by two sisters who are different as can be, even down to their skincare needs!  Moody Sisters Organic Skin Care caters to “moody” skin.  Moisturizers and cleansers designed for sensitive and troubled skin.  Free of chemicals and preservatives, these are not only 100% organic and environmentally “green”, but vegan products as well!

I got to try out the Intense Moisturizing Cream, which is a great example of the kind of hydration that Moody Sisters Organic Skin Care provides.  The cream instantly melts into your skin.  It kept my heels soft all day.  And it’s also perfect for my knuckles and cuticles—or for bedtime use on my hands.  As someone who has suffered from dry skin and eczema for years, I know a good lotion or cream when I use it: and Moody Sisters passes the test!

Another product I can’t wait to try is the paraben free Powdered Deodorant!  It sounds like a great alternative to the icky ingredients in most deodorants available in the stores.

It’s always exciting to see how other young moms find a way to stay home with their little ones while contributing to the family income.  But the Moody Sisters’ business is extra-special to me because my husband and Whitney’s husband are cousins.

To see all the great items these sisters have put together, check out the Moody Sisters Etsy Shop or visit their Facebook Page.  Be sure to “heart” their shop and “like” their page in order to help them celebrate the launch of their product line on November 5!

imageMy hubby gave me Alan Jackson’s “Precious Memories” CD for my birthday.  I’ve played it on repeat over and over again. All the verses of the hymns, sung as easy-listening Country music.  How can it get any better than that?  (My hubby knows me so very well!)

imageFor my hubby’s birthday, I gave him Andrew Peterson’s CD “Counting Stars“.  It’s not Country, but some of it sounds sort of Country.  And the lyrics are amazing.  Reading Lanier’s review of his other albums made me decide I might have to try his music out.  But when I heard “Dancing in the Minefields” I was hooked.  Lanier’s review even got my parents listening to his music!

So tell me, what CD did you purchase last?

Ginger “What is it with women and ginger?” my husband wanted to know.

He’d been to town, and returned with our favorite treat: Haagen-Dazs!

We love it when those little 14 oz. containers go on sale.  They still cost more than Dryers or Tillamook.  But they are so creamy and rich you only need a few bites—so they’re really cheaper, in our estimation.

Besides, since it’s just the two of us, we don’t even bother to dish it up into bowls.  We grab two spoons and our flavor of the evening and enjoy the lusciousness together, propped up in bed.  If only Ruth knew…!

"Baby Ice Cream"(Actually, one time she did get a special treat, thanks to a coupon: “baby ice cream” she called it.  And oh how she loved it!  She tried to share it with her baby sister, but Mary wasn’t so sure about iced cream!)

But to return to women and ginger.  My dear husband, knowing my affinity for all things ginger (from cookies to Christmas to salsa), had snatched up the latest Haagen-Dazs flavor he saw at the grocery store: Ginger!

Our perennial favorite is Dark Chocolate.  So I wasn’t sure about Ginger ice cream.  I’d had Sees Glaced Ginger chocolate candy before, and they were a bit too strong.

But in true Haagen-Dazs style, the Ginger “Five” was smooth and creamy, not too sweet, with just the perfect amount of ginger tang.

And of course, it was most delicious alternating bites of Ginger Haagen-Dazs with Dark Chocolate.  (My hubby preferred to mix his bites of Dark Chocolate with his personal Cherry Vanilla—but I don’t believe cherry and ice cream go together!)

In line at the grocery store, the ladies behind my husband Merritt noticed his ginger ice cream and asked, “Oh, have you tried that before?!  It’s delicious.  It only has five ingredients!  It tastes so good.”

He could only laugh and say his wife liked ginger.

What is it with women and ginger?

I don’t know.  But whatever it is, it’s similar to women and chocolate.  Dark chocolate.

From the day we knew we were going to bring a baby home to our little pink house, I knew we would have to get by with the bare minimum of baby toys and equipment. Finding room for a crib among the bookshelves in our 700-some square foot home was fairly easy. But clothes, more books (for the baby, of course), and toys? It was going to be a puzzle.

Starting out with a cradle (handmade by a family friend) helped with the space issue at first. But our little girl is quickly stretching out to read both ends of the cradle, and will be ready for us to move the crib in. Which means I can organize the clothes, blankets, and diapers–that are spilling out of their precarious stacks–into bins under the crib!
I wouldn’t trade our little one-room (plus a bathroom) house. It has enabled us to live rent-free in a house that’s paid for. It’s just made us rather selective about what kind of baby equipment we bring home. But when Ruth relaxed in the swing at Grandma’s house…and stared wide-eyed at the toys hanging from the baby “gym” that used to be her aunt and uncle’s…her daddy was easy to convince. Especially when we found a collapsible baby gym and folding mini swing at a consignment store for a fraction of the retail price.

Our other favorite baby equipment?

Kiddopotamus’ SwaddleMe is great. (Thanks to that lady sitting on the plane next to my mom for telling us about them!) There’s nothing like velcro to make it easier to put those centuries-old “swaddling clothes” on your baby! And, swaddling helps babies sleep better by guarding against the “startle reflex” that often wakes them up. SwaddleMes come in all colors and sizes, and make a great inexpensive shower gift. The seamstress mom could easily make her own, too!

Having a baby born the day after Thanksgiving meant lots of cold weather for a very little girl. I don’t know what I would have done without the J.J. Cole Collection BundleMe a friend gave us. (And she had two girls, so it was even pink!) The bottom part stays in the carseat, providing a warm, cozy seat for the baby. The top zips up over the lower half of the baby to keep them warm. All without excessive layers making baby too fat to buckle up!
And of course, last but not least, is the Boppy nursing pillow, that saves mom’s back now, and will help support baby’s back when she learns to sit up later on.

That’s all for now, folks. Stay tuned as we approach toddlerhood, for more favorites from this dad and mom…
